Today’s Mark Lawrence review is the book that started it all. Prince Of Thorns.

About the book:

A stunning fantasy debut from a major new talent!
When he was nine, he watched his mother and brother killed before him. By the time he was thirteen, he was the leader of a band of bloodthirsty thugs. By fifteen, he intends to be king…
It’s time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what’s rightfully his. Since the day he was hung on the thorns of a briar patch and forced to watch Count Renar’s men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Life and death are no more than a game to him-and he has nothing left to lose.
But treachery awaits him in his father’s castle. Treachery and dark magic. No matter how fierce, can the will of one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his

About the Author:

Mark Lawrence is married with four children, one of whom is severely disabled. His day job is as a research scientist focused on various rather intractable problems in the field of artificial intelligence. He has held secret level clearance with both US and UK governments. At one point he was qualified to say ‘this isn’t rocket science … oh wait, it actually is’. Between work and caring for his disabled child, Mark spends his time writing, playing computer games, tending an allotment, brewing beer, and avoiding DIY.

I had heard so much about this book, and series. It seemed people loved it or hated it. So much controversy? I loved this book, and series. The people who hated it, made up the controversy, I guess it takes all kinds? Was there violence, was it dark? Yes but not over the top. Not enough to take away from an amazing book, with awesome characters, set in a very cool world. Jorg is the ultimate anti-hero. You hate him, you love him, and you want to know all of his story. The Broken Empire is a strange setting at first. Fantasy world? Post apocalyptic Sci-Fi universe? I think Mr. Lawrence does a fantastic job of combining these two and making it work in spectacular fashion.  I am very interested to learn more about the “builders” and there impact on Jorg’s world. Overall this book and author deserve all the high praise I have seen. I have already gone out and bought all these books, and you should too. Outstanding debut and I can’t wait for the next book, King of Thorns.
