The Black Prism by Brent Weeks

Reviewed by David Walters

Man, what a book! Brent Weeks is a new author to me and I decided to start with his 2nd trilogy, mostly after hearing all of the good things from other reviewers/bloggers and because it was one of those “If you liked this, you’ll love this” sort of deals over at Amazon. Fantasy is a newer genre to me and one that I have completely fallen in love with, thanks to the Michael Fletchers, Mark Lawrences and Peter Newmans of the world.

Though is starts out relatively slow, storylines come crashing together and a world is being built before your very eyes in a matter of a few chapters. Weeks takes 5 POVs and intertwines them so well that there is no slow down. Not only that, he keeps you engaged throughout each chapter, almost giving you cliffhangers with each character before shifting over to another. You almost become too anxious because you want to know what happens next, but at least you only have to wait another chapter or 2 for the resolution.

There is a magic system in place here that can be a little difficult to understand up front, but everything is explained to you in plain English if you continue on with the story. There is also a great mix of action, suspense, romance, and humor in there to intrigue just about anyone. I personally enjoyed Simon Vance’s narration vs reading and I don’t think anyone else could’ve pulled it off.

All in all, if you haven’t taken a chance on The Black Prism, and you love epic fantasy novels, move it to the top of your list. You won’t be sorry. I wasn’t.

5/5 stars

The Black Prism by Brent Weeks

From New York Times bestselling author Brent Weeks

THE BLACK PRISM begins an action-packed tale of magic and adventure . . .

Guile is the Prism, the most powerful man in the world. He is high priest and emperor, a man whose power, wit, and charm are all that preserves a tenuous peace. Yet Prisms never last, and Guile knows exactly how long he has left to live.

When Guile discovers he has a son, born in a far kingdom after the war that put him in power, he must decide how much he’s willing to pay to protect a secret that could tear his world apart.

“Brent Weeks is so good it’s starting to tick me off.”―Peter V. Brett, New York Times bestselling author of The Desert Spear

“Weeks manages to ring new tunes on…old bells, letting a deep background slowly reveal its secrets and presenting his characters in a realistically flawed and human way.” — Publishers Weekly

“Weeks has written an epic fantasy unlike any of its contemporaries. It is a truly visionary and original work, and has set the bar high for others in its subgenre.” —graspingforthewind.com
